He plunges through the underbrush, seeking the mysterious carbuncle. Many famous researchers, great researchers, have tried to classify it and failed. But not him, he thinks, eyes gleaming like rubies. He is going to be different.

As the ruby in the carbuncle's forehead grows brighter day by day, the scholar's fervor for research wanes. Realizing a possible link, he formulates a hypothesis.
